POSITIVE THINKING

Philosophical Outreach Serving International
Teaching Initiatives on Values & Ethics

Rome · 2019–2024

For five years in Rome, a room full of people who would never otherwise meet, academics, priests, artists, engineers, entrepreneurs, public servants, drawn together by readings and performances, sat down to face the technologies remaking their lives, with the oldest questions on earth open on the table. The deepest one lay underneath all the others: once everything can be done for us, what are people for? The answers we kept arriving at were old ones: friendship, community, the life of virtue, the great arts. And theater, made by many hands, complete only when it is shared, became our way of practicing them, a rehearsal for the society we hope to build.

The programs

Philosophia Fantasia was the children’s program: philosophy taught through story and performance, on the wager that theater and philosophy were born together, in ritual, in myth, and in Plato’s dialogues, and that a child who learns to imagine well learns to think well.

Schopenhauer & Friends was the adults’: staged readings and arguments, Pascal against the algorithm, Bergson on time in an age of acceleration, Camus, Wittgenstein, Merleau-Ponty read aloud and put to work.

Built entirely on the appetite of people to think together. The bridge between Le Théâtre des Éphémères and La Comédie des Enfants de Cœur.
